Uptown Charlotte, North Carolina

Charlotte, North Carolina recently has undergone quite a change. One change is a reference to the name of the heart of the city. Old timers refer to the area as downtown, whereas newcomers refer to it as uptown. Therefore, whether you call it downtown or uptown, you are referring to the same area, and to go anywhere in the city, you have to travel up a hill to get to uptown.

Uptown Charlotte consists of four quadrants. The first area was known to be extremely dangerous but has really cleaned up its act and now is one of the more desirable sections of the city in which to live. There is much new construction of skyscrapers, hotels and condominiums, which support the new and booming economy as well as providing residences for many. Uptown hosts a population of around 11,000, but more than 44,000 people work in the city. Another section of Uptown Charlotte is devoted to the financial district. Charlotte is second only to New York City in the housing of financial institutions. Bank of America and Wachovia are just two of the companies that have established their headquarters in Uptown Charlotte. With the renovation of Uptown Charlotte, tourist trade has increased dramatically.

Charlotte is an area rich in history. There is much to see and do for all ages and interests. Culturally, Uptown Charlotte has blended the charm of the past with the elegance of the present. Uptown offers live theatre, symphonies, movies, an art museum, zoos and sports, both professional and collegiate. Uptown also is home to many shopping malls and upscale restaurants.
