Hollywood gossip seems to be of immense interest to many people of the world. It does not have to be true or relevant to anyone, but the gossip hounds will tackle it and present it on television or in the tabloids. Once a Hollywood actor or actress gains any sort of notoriety, the cameras are ready to click on their every move and stories are published as quickly as possible so the writer can be the first to “break the news.”
Take, for example, the current Hollywood gossip involving David Letterman and the blackmailer Robert Halderman. It is everywhere in the tabloids, talk television, and radio, with pictures and comments from all the parties involved, which allows every reporter to slant the situation to a terrible degree. People thrive on the gossip.
Research cannot find a definitive reason for Hollywood gossip to be so popular. Celebrities' agents know that it is important to keep their stars in the limelight and some of the gossip is obviously staged. Fans of the celebrities seem to have a deep desire to know all the intimate details of the celebrities' lives and it becomes a vicious cycle. Even though the Hollywood celebrities are human, it is the gossip and media that have set them apart. Unfortunately, when the people actually do something "normal," it is torn apart and broadcast constantly. Perhaps that is the tragedy of all this gossip, especially with the young people that are simply not equipped to deal with the gossip, which can be very cruel.
