Soldiers at War

War is painful and ugly, but the men and women who serve their country as soldiers deserve the highest degree of respect. They suffer hardships in war that many of us can only imagine, leave the homes and families they love, and face death time after time. They may watch friends and comrades die or encounter civilian casualties that will haunt them for the rest of their lives. They may face hostage situations or be captured and imprisoned in the line of duty. And yet, these men and women continue to do their duty and protect those who depend upon them.

The life of a soldier has always been a hard one. Once, when transportation and technology was less advanced, the life of a soldier was even harder. They had primitive shelter, usually lacked fresh or adequate supplies, and suffered from rampant disease. Medical attention was rudimentary at best, often involving amputations and other grisly battlefield treatments. Luckily, today, while the life of a soldier at war is still not easy, by any means, they have fresh food and medical attention readily available.

Soldiers undergo many changes in war. They may find it hard to adjust when they return to their peaceful homes and quiet former lives. For some, it is simply a relief, while others suffer from various issues, such as post-traumatic stress disorder. This disorder, brought about as a result of terrifying or life-threatening experiences, can plague soldiers, who are forced to relive their frightening experiences.

Soldiers sacrifice much in war to protect and serve their country, their people, and their families. It is important to honor and respect that sacrifice.
